The Biggest Snubs and Surprises of the 2015 Emmy Nominations

By Elana Goodwin on July 21, 2015

Last Thursday, the 2015 Emmy nominations were announced and as usual, there were quite a few unexpected nominations to be found among the list and some that shockingly didn’t make the cut.

Here are the biggest snubs and surprises of this year’s Emmy nominations.

Outstanding Drama Series Snubs. Many were shocked when the Outstanding Drama Series list didn’t include Emmy nominations for the big hit freshman shows “How to Get Away with Murder” (ABC) or “Empire” (Fox). “Empire’s” Taraji P. Henson was the only cast member of “Empire” to be recognized, earning a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, with “HTGAWM’s” Viola Davis nominated in the same category.

“HTGAWM’s” Cicely Tyson also received a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. While no show was completely shut out, the Academy was sorely remiss in not recognizing the two outstanding shows.

Additionally, Showtime’s “The Affair,” which won the Golden Globe for Best Drama, wasn’t nominated in the same category for the Emmy. To add insult to injury, stars Dominic West and Ruth Wilson were also not recognized, even though Wilson won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama.

“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” Snub/Surprise. “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” leading lady Ellie Kemper unfortunately failed to be nominated for her starring role on the freshman Netflix comedy. While her work on the show should’ve been recognized, the show did receive a number of other Emmy nominations.

Tituss Burgess was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Titus Andromedon, Kimmy’s roommate. Additionally, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” also received nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Jane Krakowski, Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Tina Fey, and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Jon Hamm.

“Orphan Black” Surprise. After two years of being snubbed when she failed to receive an Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Tatiana Maslany finally was nominated for her multiple roles on the BBC America sci-fi drama “Orphan Black.”

Her performance over the show’s three seasons has been praised by both fans and critics alike as she plays several different characters that are clones.

Leading Actor/Actress Snubs. In the Comedy Leading Actress category, one of the biggest snubs many were upset about was Gina Rodriguez not making the list. Even though Gina Rodriguez won a Golden Globe for her role on The CW’s “Jane the Virgin” and the series was nominated for a Globe earlier this year, Rodriguez didn’t get an Emmy nomination and the show failed to be recognized as well.

Meanwhile, in the Leading Actor in a Comedy category, Jim Parsons, who has won four Emmys in the last five years for his lead role on “The Big Bang Theory” as Sheldon Cooper, failed to even be nominated for an Emmy this year.

Plus, “The Big Bang Theory” was also not nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series this year and the only 2015 Emmy nominations the show received were for Mayim Bialik for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Christine Baranski for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.

Outstanding Comedy Snubs. Personally, I was disappointed to see the Academy overlook Fox comedy-turned-Hulu series “The Mindy Project” yet again, with the show failing to earn a nom for Outstanding Comedy Series or recognize stars Mindy Kaling or Chris Messina for their performances on the series.

Also, fans of “Parenthood,” which had its series finale this year, were disappointed that the show again failed to earn an Emmy nod, especially as this year was the show’s last opportunity to do so.

Comedy Nomination Surprises. “Parks and Recreation,” which aired its last episodes this year, earned both a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series and also saw star Amy Poehler up for the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Leslie Knope for the Emmy, people!

The Emmy nominations also proved it really is the Year of Amy. Amy Schumer’s Comedy Central show “Inside Amy Schumer,” which recently finished its third season, earned multiple Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series, Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, plus a nomination Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Paul Giamatti. (“Inside Amy Schumer” also won a Peabody Award this year.)

The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards will be hosted by Andy Samberg on September 20 on Fox – so start praying now for your favorite shows and actors to win!
