Possible Mars Mission Announcement Coming Soon

By Jorge Suarez on October 9, 2015

Space lovers around the world went crazy this week after the private aerospace company, SpaceX, dropped a teaser on Twitter about a huge announcement coming soon. As of yet, there have been no details of what the announcement is about, or when it will be made. However, rumors have already started circling and there is also some solid evidence that SpaceX may be announcing a mission to Mars.

That’s right, I said it. A mission to Mars. In the decade that SpaceX has been in business, they have become one of the most exciting and revolutionary private spaceflight companies in the world. Now it seems the company has no intention of slowing down. The company’s CEO, Elon Musk, has stated his hopes for SpaceX to one day be able to explore the solar system. He is also confident that his company will be able to send humans to Mars within 20 years, and eventually form a settlement there. When asked how a Martian society could work, Elon raised the possibility of sending nuclear bombs to the north poles of Mars in order to create more heat for the planet. Every few seconds a bomb will explode, heating the atmosphere similar to how our own sun powers the solar system using nuclear fusion. The company has already made a huge impact on the industry, with the development of the reusable Falcon 1 and Falcon 9 rockets, and the Dragon spacecraft, which is currently being used to transport supplies to the International Space Station. When it comes to spaceflight ventures, there have been a few high-profile incidents. However, with all of the new space technology they have developed, SpaceX has proven to be a capable contender for the space race.

The news that an announcement is on the way came from a Tweet sent out on Wednesday from Chris Bergin, the managing editor and founder of NASASpaceflight. “It may take weeks, or even months, to be announced, but what I’ve been shown is THE most exciting thing EVER. #SpaceX” he wrote on Twitter.

Many believe that Chris Bergin had special access to something from SpaceX that regards their mission to Mars. Elon Musk once said during an AMA on Reddit that he was planning to release details about his companies adventure to Mars by the end of 2015, and also mentioned the idea of a Mars Colonial Transporter (MCT).

Some suggested that Chris may have seen an EM Drive, or the Hyperloop – which is a technology currently being worked on at the company to create a train that can travel 1,200 km/h. However, Bergin quickly ended these theories on Twitter, and stated that while Hyperloop is cool, the announcement will pertain to something related to spaceflight.

What if the announcement has nothing to do with Mars? Other possible announcements may include the new, movie-inspired spacesuits that SpaceX has been designing for astronauts, details on its Falcon Heavy rocket, information on reusable rocket technology, or maybe something else entirely that no one would have been able to guess. In the end, we don’t know anything until we hear it from the organization itself. For now, we just need to wait for the news, and try our best not to over-speculate.
