Orange, Purple and Pink: Clemson University Takes on Breast Cancer Awareness Month
As the leaves began to change and the heat of September dissipated into the cool breeze of October, Clemson University seemed to adopt another color along with their signature orange and purple…pink.
October is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is dedicated to raising awareness and educating individuals about breast cancer. Since its inception more than 25 years ago, it has been at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues and has evolved along with the national dialogue on breast cancer. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month recognizes that, although many great strides have been made in breast cancer awareness and treatment, there remains much to be accomplished.
Everywhere on campus, the signs of support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month were evident. Students and faculty pinned pink ribbons to their bags, wore pink clothing in tribute, and some women went as far as to dye strands of their hair pink.
Along with adorning themselves in a wash of pink, Clemson students and faculty also participated in many fundraising and awareness events. On October 24th the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority hosted its 20th annual “Big Man on Campus” male beauty pageant. The pageant consists of choreographed dances, talent competitions, contestant interviews and a showcase of rock-and-roll attire. With a goal of $25,000, all of the ticket proceeds benefit the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation, which supports education, research and support for finding a cure for breast cancer.
The freshman dorms of Manning and Mauldin, located in the horseshoe, also made an effort to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With events like cupcake decorating,”dig pink”volleyball, letter writing, and a balloon release, loved ones were honored and remembered.
Suffice it to say, the Clemson family filled the campus with hope and strength in support of such a worthwhile cause.
