To ease some of your anxiety and stress, here are five important tips on how to land your dream job at a creative agency:

1. Be selective

Not every company is going to be right for you. The way to find out which companies will best fit your personality is to screen the interviewer just as they are screening you. This will make the difference between finding just any job versus a dream job; finding the right fit is key. It is essential that you be yourself in order to see if you will fit in well at this job, and if you believe that you are qualified for this position, then being yourself will show it.

You should be natural during an interview; there is no reason to put on a facade. Your potential boss wants to know who you are and what you are bringing to the table, just as you want to know your potential boss and what he or she will be expecting from you.

2. Perfect your portfolio

Building your portfolio is extremely important. Your portfolio shows what you can do and what type of work you can produce. In any creative interview, the first thing that is asked for is your portfolio. This allows your interviewer the opportunity to assess who you are as an artist. Spend some time perfecting your portfolio and make sure that it properly reflects who you are and what you are interested in doing.

3. Reach out to businesses

Job opportunities will not come knocking on your door. You need to take the initiative to research businesses and apply to those which interest you. It is up to you to reach out to production companies and agencies; however, since these companies are always eager to find new talent, once you have contacted them they will most likely be interested in meeting with you.

4. Network, network, network

While you are still in school take advantage of getting to know the creative people around you. It is important that you make the effort to build relationships and interact with those around you who are most creative. Your professors are a great resource and they can be a very useful aid in helping to perfect your portfolio. Professors can be powerful mentors who can help to direct you in future endeavors. Be outgoing and make it happen. Furthermore, make the effort to go see the speakers who come to your school. Take the time to get to know them, network with them. They can provide excellent help in the future; you never know where your career may take you. The more people you take the time to build meaningful relationships with, the better off you will be.

5. Be original

Originality is the number one quality looked for in a candidate for any job at a creative agency. Why should you be hired if you are indistinguishable from all of the other applicants? Set yourself apart in your work and your presentation. Make yourself stand out and highlight your unique skills. Creative agencies require original people in order to keep their companies on the cutting edge. After all, creativity consists of originality in nature. Show them that you can add something special to their company.

Prepare yourself by following these tips and this daunting task will be easier to achieve than you think. Good luck.
