5 Best Crappy Food Combinations

By Joely Friedman on November 21, 2013

It’s hard to eat something that looks gross. It’s hard, but it’s not impossible. I have eaten many unappetizing meals in my day. Among them are the following:

1. This vegetarian burger that I made yesterday.

I decided it would be nice to smash on a juicy burger after English class; but being a vegetarian, I had to turn to a black bean and cabbage burger.

After I made the bad choice to let this be my lunch, I followed it up with another bad choice—I microwaved the “burger” for double the instructed duration. My microwave is subpar, so out of habit I always add an extra minute on to anything I am warming up. This habit proved to be unfortunate when I pulled out a steaming rock hard patty.

Feelings of worry washed over me as I contemplated the possibility of not having lunch, so in an attempt to make my lunch seem more appetizing, I decided to make my vegetarian burger an optimist.

I can officially share with you that adding ketchup to a mod-podge of black beans and cabbages is a crappy food combination.

2. Watery hummus with old tomatoes and cucumbers.

I decided to give cooking a try on a day that I was feeling Mediterranean. The result of this is pictured above.

The hummus I attempted to produce turned out to be much less like hummus and much more like peanut butter water. Then I threw on some questionably old veggies and called it a day.

3. Mushy banana and viscous chocolate.

This here is another example of a crappy food combination. However, this is commonly mistaken as being a non-crappy food combination. It is an amateur’s mistake.

Sure, in theory combining bananas and chocolate sounds like it could be an ok idea. But trust me, it’s not.

The mushy banana and the viscous chocolate do not compliment one another. Your mouth doesn’t know how to separate the flavors when confronted with such an ordeal.

Play it safe when it comes to bananas. Keep them far away from chocolate.

4. Matzo cracker pizza

When trying to cut back on carbs, replacing pizza dough with a giant matzo cracker is not the best idea. The tomato sauce has nothing to seep into and the cheese is forced to act as glue when the cracker crumbles with the first bite. While this is not a bad snack per say, it lacks in the taste and texture department if you know the pleasure of sinking your teeth into thick and dense crust pizza.

5. Leftover fruit city

And last but not least, this crappy food combination is what I like to call leftover-city. The idea here is to grab that old fruit you have stuck in the back of your refrigerator and mix it together with oatmeal and plop it into the oven.

What you have here is not exactly mouthwatering. In fact, this turns out to not be the greatest combination. I would recommend opting for a proper apple crisp if you are looking for that healthy dessert.
