What To Wear On A First Date This August

By Alexia Gonzalez on July 28, 2015

So you’ve mustered up the confidence to start a conversation with that very good-looking guy in your lit class. Your efforts have paid off because a mere “oh it looks like it’s going to rain later” has turned into days of walking to the parking garage together after class, and finally he’s asked you on an official date!

Cue the pre-date jitters and extensive preparation. The most nerve-wracking part of this entire process has to be picking out the perfect outfit. This first date look is a pivotal point in the cultivation of what has the potential to end up in an actual relationship. You want to give the best impression of yourself.

Let’s imagine that this (hypothetical) date is taking place in the beginning of the semester, so it’s technically still summer. Since the warm weather may cause you to instantly break out your flirtiest sundress you may want to reconsider such revealing attire. Your first date look should achieve a balance between elegant seductress and “hey your mom would totally love me.”

Since this is a high-pressure fashion situation, it may sometimes lend itself to misguided sartorial decisions. There’s so much emotion wrapped up in the occasion, that it helps to have some clear-headed ground rules for your outfit. Before you settle on the sexiest outfit in your closet, take a moment to consider these very important tips for dressing for your summery first-date!

Although it may sound a bit obvious, remember to give yourself plenty of time to plan out what you’re wearing (and enough time to steam or iron your outfit beforehand!). Being disheveled and stressed out until the second your date picks you up is no way to start out! Also, wear something that fits you! It shouldn’t be too loose or oversized—something that shows off your figure but isn’t too tight.

*A great rule of thumb for the first date: Choose a color or outfit that you are often complimented on and feel confident in, while sophisticated and elegant.*

To begin, always check out the venue online to get a feel for the setting if you’re unfamiliar with it. Let location be your guide–your look should reflect your environment.

Comfort should be your first priority! The last thing you want to do is be fidgeting with your outfit—there are more important things to be thinking about!

Pick one best asset to show off and that’s it. For example: Do you have great arms? Wear a strapless maxi dress. Great legs? Wear shorts or a skirt. The bottom line—too much skin can actually be a turn off and look like you’re trying too hard. If you wear something short, balance that out with long sleeves and a low heel.

If you decide to wear something backless or low cut in the front, wear it with a maxi skirt or jeans. Don’t be afraid to show a little unexpected skin. Pair a low-back top with skinny jeans, or a crop top with a high-waisted pencil skirt. Don’t overexpose.

Don’t let your accessories overwhelm. Who doesn’t love an elbow-reaching stack of bangles, but when your date can’t hear you over the clanking on your arm, you know you’ve piled on too many.

Add a bit of glamour to your look by picking a key statement piece. Try an embellished clutch, a chunky necklace, or some killer (not literally) stilettos.

Opt for comfortable shoes. Be sure to choose a shoe you’re comfortable in — test-driving a new pair can spell disaster if a moonlit stroll is suggested. Date night is not the time for a pirate-y limp.

Don’t assume your fab LBD is the perfect date night go-to. Is it a fancy dinner or a football game? Knowing your surroundings and dressing appropriately can go a long way to making the date more comfortable for you and your beau.

Don’t get too trendy and find balance when aiming for a contemporary look. Over-the-top-trends are awesome in magazines, but can be far from wearable in real life. Take your favorite of-the-moment style, and make it right for you.
