5 Makeup Must-Haves

By Amanda Cohen on September 26, 2015

Depending on the person, when someone realizes that they have to do their makeup for a particular event, that person will either cringe and sigh, or display a smile that goes from ear to ear.

Even though I love it when my friends do my makeup and I love the way that I look after I apply a little shimmer to my eye, I hate doing my own makeup. A friend of mine once tried explaining to me the difference between BB cream and foundation and it caused my head to spin.

I am here to tell you about five makeup products which will make doing makeup more bearable for those who hate it and which will make makeup lovers jump with joy.

1) Urban Decay Naked Palettes

Urban Decay has blessed the world with Naked Palettes 1, 2, and 3. Each palette provides 12 different eye shadow colors that are used in various areas of the eyes.

Each palette comes with a description of where each color should be applied; however, if you are like me and don’t know the first thing about which colors look better on the brow line or on the inner eye crevice, then combining the eye shadows to make either a smoky or bright tone will do just the trick!

The Naked Palettes are the definition of getting more bang for your buck, as each of the 12 shadows can be used in various areas on the eyes, allowing you to create hundreds of different looks.

2) Bobbi Brown Brow Kit

Just in case you haven’t heard the news or noticed Cara Delevingne’s rising popularity, eyebrows are in! Do you all remember when, as a kid, you would draw pictures of people without ever drawing in the caterpillar-like face shapers? I know that I used to do that because back then I never really understood why eyebrows existed.

Now, my favorite part of doing makeup (also the easiest part of doing makeup) is filling in my brows. Bobbi Brown’s Brow Kit comes in two different palettes, each having two different powders to use. Eyebrows shape your facial structure and really provide a statement when you go out with your friends.

The benefit of using powder rather than eyebrow pencil is that powder is more natural looking and easier to blend in case you mess up (which I seem to do every time I attempt doing my own makeup).

3) Maybelline Under-Eye Concealer

If you ask any college student about how they are feeling, most will say that they are extremely sleep deprived. Sleep deprivation is pretty inevitable as a college student, but that doesn’t mean that we want everyone to know that we are only getting four hours of sleep each night!

Maybelline’s various under-eye concealer products are a cheap and effective way to cover up those swollen dark circles left behind even after you have finished cramming for the organic chemistry exam. The cream comes in a tube that you twist so that little bits of the concealer come onto the “paint brush.”

You then apply the product by dabbing the brush under your eyes, and then proceed to blend the concealer in with either your fingers or a blending brush (for those of you makeup doers who are more advanced).

4) Any Type of Mascara

My friends and I always say how if we were only allowed to use one makeup product for the rest of our lives it would be mascara. The best part about mascara is that it caters to every eye color and eye shape. For blue and green eyes, black mascara that adds volume and thickness to your eyelashes deepens the eye color even more.

For brown eyes, black mascara that adds length, but not necessarily volume to the eyelashes, makes the eyes look bigger. People will never have to worry about maintaining eye contact when having a conversation with you because their eyes will be drawn to your popping eye color and long lashes.

However, depending on the type of event you are going to, choose your mascara wisely. If you are going to a more formal event, opt for mascara that uses a brush with shorter, thinner bristles so that the black doesn’t overpower your eyes. If you are going out for a night on the town with your friends, I suggest using mascara with longer and thicker bristles to thicken the eye lashes and lengthen them.

5) Tinted Moisturizer

Doing face makeup is so frustrating because so many different products have to be used—foundation, BB cream, under-eye concealer, cover up, and bronzer. However, simplifying this process is not as hard as you may think! Tinted moisturizer combines the benefits of skincare products with the effects of wearing foundation or BB cream.

Tinted moisturizer gives your face a glow and is smooth to the touch. Since there are some bronzer-like properties in tinted moisturizer, applying it after having washed your face will give you a small tan (similar to a tan you would get after laying out in the sun for an hour or so).

If you go to a school with bad winters that have little to no sunlight, tinted moisturizer is the answer to eliminating “transparent” skin.
