4 Common College Fashion Mishaps

By Amanda Cohen on November 7, 2015

Many people view college as a time to reinvent themselves.

For some, reinvention means pursuing different interests. For others, reinvention simply means changing up their “look.” I am all for people experimenting with different styles; however, a few fashion statements have made me cringe not because the outfits are “ugly,” but more because there is a time and a place for certain attire and I feel that some people do not quite understand this concept.

Here are a few fashion don’ts that I have seen in my college career thus far, and (spoiler alert), if you read far enough you might even gain some tips on how to rectify these incidences.

1. Crop-tops

Crop-tops, as much as some parents hate them, are extremely in style right now. Personally, I love wearing crop-tops with anything high-waisted like shorts, jeans, and skirts. However, when I say that I wear these revealing shirts, I mean that I wear them if I am going out for a night on the town with friends, not to class.

Some people may justify their fashion choices by arguing that certain crop-tops are more revealing than others and that they only wear the less revealing tops to class. No matter what, crop-tops always show your stomach, which is too revealing to wear to class.

If you are insistent on wearing these shirts to your English 124 class, just make sure you are wearing the top in a way that is appropriate for the daytime. For example, since Michigan apparently is reverting back to August-like weather, wear your crop-top with a high-rise maxi-skirt topped off with a kimono. Not only does this look not show off too much stomach, but it is also trendy and daytime appropriate.

I would give a suggestion on how to wear crop-tops when this beautiful weather subsides, but no one in their right mind is wearing a shirt that shows off their mid-drift in freezing cold weather.

2. Ugg Boots

I absolutely love my Uggs … I don’t care if people think that I am basic because of it; they are comfortable, warm, and practical. However, once again, there is a time and a place to wear Uggs because, in all honesty, they are not cute or fashionable.

If you are going to class, going to an exam, lounging at home, or even going to the grocery store, by all means slip on your boots and revel in the comfort. These shoes are not cute to wear to a celebratory dinner, to a bar, or on a date (unless the date is staying in and watching Netflix).

Instead of Uggs, wear vintage-like boots with a pair of fashionable calf socks. The socks provide the comfort of Uggs, but the boots are stylish and flattering. The best part about this alternative look is that it is much less expensive than buying the Australian-brand name Uggs … cheaper and cuter, what could be better?

3. High-Heels

For a girl I am considered to be pretty tall, so I never feel like I need the extra boost from platform heels on a daily basis.

Girls who are on the shorter side, I understand that sometimes it feels good to have that extra lift when walking to class, but it honestly looks strange. Most people are not graceful when they walk in heels, especially if you have to walk on a college campus where it’s crowded and has uneven sidewalks that have been plagued by snowfall.

If you want an extra inch of height, wear chunky booties, but don’t wear wedges or stilettos. If you are going out for a night on the town then yes, put on your highest heels and see the world from new heights, but I promise that it is better to look shorter without heels when walking to class.

4. Aggressive Makeup

Whether you have a class at 8:00 a.m. or 5:30 p.m., caking makeup on your face is just not the best look. Even if you are going out to Skeeps, a more natural look looks better on all people rather than eyeliner that is as thick as your eyebrow. I understand that some people find peace in doing their makeup and want to look their best for class, but there are ways to do your makeup without looking like a clown.

Face makeup is fine, especially if you want to cover up the dark circles under your eyes, but for eye makeup doing a neutral-toned eye shadow with mascara creates the perfect daytime look. If you don’t like doing your makeup, then don’t wear it (I never wear makeup to class), but if you like makeup then by all means open your makeup bag and powder away with light tones.

Remember everyone, these tips are not trying to scold anybody for being true to their style, these tips are just what I like to use so I dress appropriately for every occasion. In the end, you do you and wear what you want, but I hope these suggestions gave some people guidance on how to dress.
