If you love live music (what college student doesn’t?) you need to check out CAMPUS DJ, a music festival and DJ competition in search of college students with DJ and musical talents across the country.

CAMPUS DJ travels to all different college campuses having battles with the top DJs at the college to perform for students. The best DJs will compete against each other to become CAMPUS DJ’s 2016 winner, which includes major exposure for the artist, along with connections in the industry.

Some of the past CAMPUS DJ winners include: Flaxo (Columbia University), Bentley Montes x King Tutt (UCLA and Icon Collective), and DJ Kurr.

However, this traveling tour is not only for students who have musical talent; college students can join in on the fun and even win cash prizes. Since CAMPUS DJ competitions began in 2013, they have awarded more than $300,000 in gear and cash prizes to participating DJs and fans. Not only can college students have a fun experience dancing to the music and cheering on their classmates, but they can take home rewards as well. This is a perfect event for you to grab some friends and have a blast right on campus.

Here is a deeper look into some past CAMPUS DJ winners and participants.

2015 Winner: DJ Kurr

DJ Kurr is a student from Florida State University and is one of the youngest DJs in the industry at only 20 years old. He is one of the most successful CAMPUS DJ winners considering he is signed with Dash Radio as the official DJ for Red Cup Radio. DJ Kurr has also opened for major artists such as Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Wale. He has also had the opportunity to perform at famous nightclubs all around the country.

You can listen to DJ Kurr’s tracks here or learn more about his career here.

2015 Runner-Up: Jill Strange

DJ Jill Strange is a student from Columbia University in Chicago, IL. Listen to her latest hits here. Jill has been very successful since her win. She has articles written about her in the Phoenix New Times and she appeared on the 3rd season of the hit show, “Chicago P.D.”

CAMPUS DJ has certainly given this artist the recognition she needed to be successful in her career.

2013 Winner: Flaxo

As an economics major at Columbia University, Flaxo at the age of 19 won the 2013 CAMPUS DJ competition. With a prior love for music he entered the competition not thinking he was going to win and came out on top.

Flaxo’s real name is Nick Perlof, and he told USA TODAY that he choose his DJ name “Flaxo” because an employee at a Mexican restaurant used to call him “flaco” which translates to “skinny” in English. He thought it was a funny name and changed it to DJ Flaxo.

With his winnings Flaxo decided to donate money to a cause passionate to him called “Spin for a Cause” which donates to 826 National, allowing the younger generation to have the opportunity to write and be creative.

Reflecting on these past winning DJ’s and considering participating in the competition this year, you may wonder: what makes a good DJ?

1. The Name

Looking at past CAMPUS DJ winners, they all had awesome DJ names! Picking a DJ name is sort of like advertising your music skills. You should pick something unique and catchy, so people will not only think you’re cool, but they will remember you.

2. The Look

Having a unique style will also get your classmates and fans to recognize you. This is another way to make your own trademark as well. This can include always wearing sunglasses, or wearing crazy colors. It is good to find something to express yourself to let people know what kind of artist you are, along with being impressionable.

3. The Skills

Of course, you can’t just have a cool name and style, you have to have the musical skills as well. You can look at the past winners and participants’ music on the CAMPUS DJ website to get ideas of what a successful DJ sounds like.

On April 23, 2016, CAMPUS DJ will be hosting a music festival at Flats at West Village to determine the top talent at the University of Virginia, including access to Les Paul Electric Guitars. If you have DJ or music skills, or attend the University of Virginia, check out the competition this April, either as a participant or a fan.

You can find additional information on the CAMPUS DJ website or on their Facebook and Twitter pages.
