Spring Cleaning: 5 Ways to Tidy Up Your Life

By Peyton Carper on April 1, 2016

The beginning of spring signals new beginnings and, for many of us, a warning of the impending end of the semester. That means finals, registering for classes, and usually lots of stress (and possibly tears). It’s easy to catastrophize when you’re in this kind of state, and it may seem impossible to take care of everything. Taking care of little tasks can help to feel less overwhelmed, so here are some easy ideas to help de-clutter your life so you can focus on the more important things.

1. Sort through your clothes.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed if you have a lot of stuff in your dorm or your apartment, and a lot of that clutter can be traced back to clothes. Most of us are guilty of having held onto clothes we no longer wear for far too long. A general rule to follow is this: if you haven’t worn it in 6 months, throw it out. You can either donate the clothes you unearth, or sell them to places like Plato’s Closet if you need a little  extra cash.

 2. Go to the gym or take a walk.

Sometimes when we sit in one place for too long, lethargy starts to settle in and make us feel depressed. As cliche as it is, it helps to get up and move around. Exercise gives us an extra bonus of healthy physical activity as well as mental stimulation. Make sure to drink lots of water while you’re at it.

 3. Take care of smaller assignments.

Taking care of daunting tasks can help define the more important things that you need to accomplish. Sending those emails you’ve been procrastinating on only takes a few minutes and will check a few things off of your to do list while making you feel more productive. Speaking of lists…

 4. Make a to-do list.

Though it might seem like this would add even more stress, making a list of all the things you need to accomplish might just help you prioritize what needs to be done when. You can even color-code it to feel extra productive, and having a definitive list for the week will help you feel less stressed long-term.

5. Call your mom.

What’s more reassuring than talking to your sweet old momma? Not only can she probably provide you with some guidance to help you solve the stress in your life, it’s stress relieving just to talk to somebody about what’s going on in your life. Not to mention, you probably haven’t talked to her nearly as much as she deserves. Shame on you.
