Here's Why You Should Study Abroad In Italy

By Kylie Exline on July 11, 2016

It should not be too hard to try to convince you to want to visit Italia, but if you are playing hard to get, I’ll join in on the fun.

Italy is well-known for its food, beauty and language. Although all are very true, the vast country offers way more than simple stereotypes — like their beautiful people. Come on, guys.

With Italian being my minor and all, I will try to not force-feed the many reasons you should visit the alluring land. Warning: You will 100 percent want to book your trip immediately after reading this. You are welcome.

The Culture/La Cultura

Italy represents the merit of culture in a huge way. Dating back to when it was unified in 1861, there are decades worth of knowledge to learn about. There is rich historical context, intricate architecture, and various religious traditional values.

Being a major center for the Renaissance, art is a primary facet to the country. Just visit any of the very famous monuments, such as the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, and St. Peter’s Basilica. It also housed the Roman Empire, which you know, lasted only hundreds of years (507 to be exact). No big deal.

Dance and music are also vital aspects of their culture. And who doesn’t like time for celebration? Every month focuses on a specific festival or holiday. Popular ones include la Befana, Festa de la Madonna Bruna, and Santa Lucia Day. The list goes on, believe me.

The Experience/L’esperienza

When visiting Italia, there is an obvious overall experience to be sought after. You can and should go sightseeing, go on tourist expenditures, and take many, many pictures. Have no shame in your game.

Along with the prominent landmarks located in the country, there is a huge statement to be made, and that statement is fashion. Milan is home to its Fashion Week every September, and calls about people from all over the world. So basically, you are invited to participate. Lucky you.

This experience of being in Italia is one that cannot be offered in many other countries. Their amiability toward tourists is amazing, as is their openness to learning about separate, diverse cultures. It truly is a unique land.

The Beauty/La Belleza

Like mentioned before, this country’s beauty is one to envy from anywhere. Their many mountains include Gran Paradiso, Mont Blanc and Dolomites. Their rivers include Po, Tiber and Amo. Their volcanoes include Mount Etna, Mount Vesuvius and Monte Amiata. As you can see, you will never be bored.

The sparse land has gorgeous views, canals and plains. They have to put their wine through fermentation at some point. Plus, this always grants you the most perfect moment for a great picture. Amazing.

Beside the obvious landscape beauty, there is quite a sight to see in the people. Do not get me wrong, there are beautiful people everywhere, but Italia is definitely up there. Throw in the fact that they have golden personalities, and you will be falling in love with more than just the country. *Wink wink.*

The Food/Il Cibo

Must I say more? There is the antipasto (starter), primo and secondo pasti (meals) and of course the ever-important dolci (desserts). Prepare to gain a few pounds, guys.

Pizza is everywhere, wine is a guarantee, and full stomachs should be your exact expectation at all times possible. I am trying to prepare y’all. You will thank me later.

Visiting Italia will give you a brand new appreciation for food, and by that, I mean that you will never be satisfied with non-Italian food ever again. But that is okay, because it will just force you to visit the wonderful country once more in the near future. Or you could always move there full-time, obviously.

The Challenge/La Sfida

Of course being in a different country offers its small hiccups. There is the difference in currency, time zone, and the whole fact that it is a completely other language. But do not worry, I have faith that you will certainly make it through.

The language barrier is a common concern, and it is legitimate. If you do not know the language, you can always use translators, or attempt to understand them with little knowledge. I would not completely recommend this, however.

There will also be some challenges with the fact that you are studying abroad. This means that your professors may potentially be Italiano, and therefore expect you to understand them more. Just remember, you are getting the most out of living in a foreign country, learning their customs and values. Appreciate.

Hopefully by now you can slightly understand why studying abroad in Italia is the best move to make. You have the richness of the history and culture, the beauty of the food and people, and the challenge of being in culture shock.

Still playing hard to get? Didn’t think so.
