6 Perfect Books for Your Spring Reading Spree

It’s (finally) beginning to feel a lot like spring, and with that spring happiness comes spring reading, as the days of sitting inside and watching hours of TV on end are becoming far less socially acceptable (this isn’t to say we won’t still do it, just that we’ll try to implement more socially acceptable time-wasting activities as well).

So now, it’s time to pick out a few books for our spring reading excursions, but we’re also a little out of practice (I blame the TV). So, to help you make a few reading decisions this spring, here are six books that you should add to your must-read list.

1. “Black Chalk” by Christopher J. Yates

I just finished reading this one, and it’s 100 percent worth the read. The story follows a group of six college students and a game that will change their relationship forever. While the premise is really rather simple, you’ll quickly find that the text is anything but.

There’s constant jumping from one character’s perspective to another, time bending, and plenty of drama to last you a lifetime. The characters are complex, and many of them aren’t remotely likable, but by the end, you find yourself wishing there was more.

And, of course, the book wouldn’t be complete without a couple of twists.

2. “Who Do You Love” by Jennifer Weiner

An author well-known for her spot-on and inspiring depictions of love’s intricacies, this text is no exception. The text starts out with the story of Rachel, a young girl with a congenital heart defect that keeps her in the hospital, and Andy, a young boy with a broken arm and absent parents.

The story then unfolds over a course of three decades in which the two find that their stories are much more connected than originally presumed. The book has everything you want out of a love story: heartbreak, flirtation, humor, and drama for days. If you’re looking for a lengthy book that you won’t be able to put down, this is it!

3. “I See You” by Clare Mackintosh

One of my favorite authors at the moment, Clare Mackintosh is the queen of the twist, and I promise you won’t see them coming (trust me, I’m the queen of predicting the twist).

This text is a psychological thriller and a great one at that. “I See You” follows Zoe Walker, who finds her image in the classifieds of a newspaper. And every day, there’s a new female’s picture in her place.

Again, a very simple storyline, but the text delves into mystery, bringing you along for the ride. Before you know it, you’ll be done with the book and sitting in your hammock contemplating life.

4. “Big Little Lies” by Liane Moriarty

Perhaps some of you watched the HBO mini-series starring Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, but if not, you’re going to want to as soon as you finish this book. This book is absolutely a must-read for many reasons, one of which is the fact that the characterizations are absolutely superb.

Madeline, Celeste, and Jane are all extremely complex characters, and their families are anything but simple. The intricacies of relationships and life come out and you really understand the depth of what it means to lie, even if they are those “little” ones that couldn’t possibly do any harm.

5. “13 Reasons Why” by Jay Asher

Again, with all the hype surrounding the Netflix series, it’s impossible not to include this one. If you haven’t read the text, drop everything and pick up a copy, because I promise you it’s worth reading.

Unfortunately (because trust me, this isn’t a light, carefree read), the contents of the book is all too real in the world of high school, and the depictions in the text couldn’t do a better job of explaining just how little it takes to damage somebody beyond repair.

It may be a young adult read, but the book feels much larger than that, as does the series.

6. “Scrappy Little Nobody” by Anna Kendrick

To end on a lighter note, there’s Anna Kendrick’s autobiography that I promise you’ll be finished with in no time. You can completely hear her sarcastic humor (that wit that is absolutely impossible to ignore, and we all love it way too much) throughout and whether you’re a fan of hers or not, the text is filled with touching and hilarious stories to get you through the spring and directly into that summer mood.

So there you have it! These six books are going to help you to not only enjoy the warm, spring breezes but also to avoid those lovely April showers (at least for the next two weeks). So whether it’s a rainy day in or a sunny day out, you’ll be well prepared!

Happy reading!
