GOVERNMENT SAYS NO TO AT&T TAKEOVER OF TIME-WARNER
The U.S. Justice Department says it will block the $85 million AT&T takeover of Time Warner unless the telecommunication giant sells off CNN – a network targeted frequently by Trump.
NPR reports, “The move has therefore triggered concerns within CNN that the administration is taking action against a media outfit simply because it has angered the president with its coverage, raising First Amendment implications.”
Three people with knowledge of the negotiations, but who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed that the Justice Department gave AT&T the choice to get rid of Time Warner’s Broadcasting division including CNN or give up DirecTV, AT&T’s giant satellite television provider. AT&T Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson said they have no intention of selling CNN to win the Time Warner deal.
