5 Student New Year's Resolutions

By Ashley Paskill on December 31, 2017

The New Year is a great time to set new goals and refocus on what you want in your life. For many students, the spring semester is the second half of their academic year. This usually means that they may be worn down and burnt out from the fall semester. 2018 has the potential to be the best year ever, and there are steps that you can take to make this happen.

1. Save money.

It is no secret that student loan debt is an issue for many students. Saving money is a great way to combat this and to keep your loans as low as possible. Get a part-time job to make some extra money and pay off loan interest if you can afford it. Try to minimize unnecessary spending on things you do not need.

2. Get better grades.

Unless your GPA is perfect, there is room for improvement. Make an effort to improve your GPA. If you are struggling, talk to your professors or visit the tutoring center on campus. Team up with classmates to study for exams and get any missed notes. Even if you are not the best student, there is always something you can do to work towards your goals.

3. Take a class outside of your comfort zone.

Even though you might have a set of classes that are required for your degree, do not be afraid to take something out of your major or comfort zone. Take something that is challenging to you. Even if you struggle in the process, you will feel so proud that you made it through and worked hard at something difficult.

4. Get more involved on campus.

There are several ways to do things on campus, and doing so will help boost your resume. Join a student organization to build up skills related to your major or to learn something new. Go to events and attend guest lectures. Getting out and expanding your horizons will help you in your career and will allow you to meet new people and make memories to last a lifetime.

5. Practice more self-care.

College can be stressful and busy, between classes and activities. While these things are important, it is important to take care of yourself. Get sleep and avoid all-nighters. Make sure to eat when you are hungry and do not be afraid to say “No” to things if you are feeling overwhelmed.  Your mental health is the most important thing.
