The 51st annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival kicked off Thursday to celebrate the jazz musician Lionel Hampton and his legacy. Thousands of students from all over the area visited the University of Idaho for three days of music classes, workshops, and competition.

Thursday night was the Hamp’s Gala, a tradition that has been a part of the festival for many years. This event featured the Lionel Hampton School of Music student performances. Many students performed and made audience members excited about the upcoming events at the festival

Many classes will be offered during the festival and Friday and Saturday. Some of them include:

  • Christa Davis will host a Krump Hip-Hop Dance Workshop from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the physical education building studio 212
  • Doc Skinner, the founder of the festival, will be discussing his friendship with Lionel Hampton from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the Borah Theater
  • Kevin Woods will be hosting a workshop about different methods and philosophies regarding instrument sounds as well as teaching attendants about enhancing their endurance and range. The concepts discussed can be applied to any skill level. The event will be held in the Idaho Commons Crest/Horizon Room from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
  • In the Jansen Engineering Building, Room 104, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., Angela Parris will be holding a workshop called “What I Wish I’d learned in Music School.” She will be discussing the ways students can use a degree in music after graduation.
  • The Moscow Swing Devils will be hosting a swing dancing workshop in the physical education building, room 111, from 10-11 a.m.

These are just a few of the classes that will be offered throughout the rest of the day. Workshops on music and music philosophy will be hosted through the day.

Throughout the day, student competitions in various categories will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. They include elementary, junior high, high school and college vocal and instrument competitions.

At 4:30 p.m. there will be a young artist’s concert. Following that concert is another concert that features Dawn Clement’s Gratitude Trio, U of I Jazz Choir and Jazz Band with Dawn Clement and Paul McKee and was all local music competition winners. Each concert is held in the Kibbe Dome.

Saturday from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m., the same classes as Friday will be featured in order to accommodate students who couldn’t attend classes that conflicted with one another. Throughout the day, more student competitions will be held. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be various instrument competitions for high school students.

Another young artist’s concert will be held at 4:30 p.m. Following that concert will be a Vanguard Jazz Orchestra concert with the New Lionel Hampton Big Band featuring Joseph Doubleday and Antonia Bennet. Each concert will be held in the Kibbe Dome as well.
