When living in an apartment, many individuals find that the color scheme picked out by the leasing office is rather bland. In fact, most leasing offices go for neutral colors in order to allow residents the opportunity to decorate their apartment for themselves.

But how do you decorate a space with some pops of color without overdoing it? And what’s the best way to decorate for color in a first apartment?

Here are six tips on decorating your apartment so that you can add a pop of color that will make your apartment feel like a home.

1. Use Accent Colors

One of the most common ways in which people overdo the colors in their apartments is to use too much of a color that they like. In order to avoid this problem, I recommend using accent colors as well as a base color to make sure your apartment colors aren’t overwhelming.

This means that you can keep your apartment complex’s neutral color scheme, but add a pop of color with accent pieces such as throw pillows. Or, you can always change up the neutral colors to one that you like better, but be sure that you add a pop of color in another way, just don’t overdo it.

2. Paint

Again, some apartment complexes will give you the option to paint your space. If this is an option available to you and you have the funds to do so, I recommend using this as an opportunity to add a little color to your living room.

You can paint the room one, solid color, paint one accent wall a different color or paint all walls a neutral color and use art and other accent pieces such as picture frames to bring in a little more color.

Painting isn’t always an option, but when it is, it’s a great one to take advantage of.

3. Bring in Plants

Plants are a great way to bring in a little color into a room. Most plants are vibrant (either green or flowers with multiple colors), and this can really bring a room to life, both literally and figuratively.

For those of you that may not have a green thumb, you can always bring in fake plants to bring in a little color without risking killing the plant. Either way, plants are a great way to add a little color to a space.

4. Match Your Appliances

Many individuals will pick out appliances and technology items without really giving a second thought to color. I recommend using this opportunity to pick out the colors that you like and run with it.

Some appliances come in one color, which is hard to work with, but for those that give you options, play around with color. For instance, if you can get a DVD player that’s a different color than the normal black, this is a great way to add a little color in a useful manner.

5. Purchase Artwork

Again, using your wall space as an opportunity for added color is a great idea. Any time you have space on your walls, you should be using it, whether inserting shelves or hanging pictures. These are all opportunities for added color, so I recommend moving away from neutral colors and opting for more exciting color schemes.

Many individuals will also purchase artwork to add a pop of color and tie in the other pieces of the room. If this is in the budget, it’s a viable option that will really bring your room to life in a vibrant and exciting way.

6. Use an Area Rug

Last, but not least, many individuals will use an area rug as an opportunity to add a little color to a living room and to tie together any other, neutral pieces that are in the room.

Rugs can be expensive, so it’s best to look around for the best deal, but adding a rug to a room definitely provides a pop of color that it could need. Whether your room is hardwood or carpet, the addition of a rug will protect your floors and add some color, making it useful in multiple ways as well. So if this option is in the budget, you should definitely take advantage of it.

Again, decorating an apartment for the first time can seem like a daunting task, especially if you aren’t all that familiar with how to decorate and add colors appropriately.

With that in mind, these six tips can help get you started when it comes to decorating, but you should also play into your own, personal taste and really think through the colors you like and the way they make you feel.

You can easily make your apartment a home with colors, you just have to know what colors you like and follow these six decorating tips.

Happy decorating!
