5 Tips to Avoid That Dreaded "Freshman 15"

By Nicole Hindberg on March 4, 2019

The “Freshman 15” is a phenomenon that all college students are told about before they head off to college. Many college students dread it and regret it by the end of their freshmen year. This is the first time you are away from home and making your own decisions about your lifestyle and food choices can be hard for some. Here are five tips to avoid the “Freshman 15.”

1. Get enough sleep: I know it seems impossible for college students, but it is essential to your help in many ways. Not only will it help your brain function in school, but it also helps suppress many hormones that contribute to hunger and cravings.

2, Eat a balanced breakfast: Skipping this meal will cause you to snack more during the day. When you start the day on an empty stomach you not only are fatiguing yourself, but you are not giving yourself enough energy to start the day. In order to compensate for that, your body will become hungrier more often which means more snacking on unhealthy options for you.

3. Visit your Campus Rec Center for at least 30 minutes every day: Every school has a rec center and every student can access it for free. Keeping your body moving not only keeps you healthy and keep your weight down, it will actually help your mental state. Working out eases the stress that you build up throughout the day. Use this time to take a break from everything but still make your body work. Even going for a 30-minute walk every day will give the same benefits.

4. Keep some healthy snacks in your dorm: The cafeteria does not always have the healthiest choices for you. With the all you can eat style cafeterias that most colleges have, students tend to overeat. Not only overeat but overeat the bad stuff. If you keep healthy snacks in your room, you won’t be as tempted to go down to the cafeteria and get something that isn’t as good for you.

5. Motivate a friend and they will motivate you: Staying healthy and in shape takes a lot of motivation and when you have a friend to take the journey with, you are more likely to stick with a healthier lifestyle. Having a gym buddy will also create a more fun and entertaining workout session.

All in all, everyone needs to stay healthy. Eating a balanced diet and keeping yourself in shape is not only good for your body but good for your mind.
