Decorating your apartment is a bit of a challenge, especially if you are unable to make any changes that are permanent. Most apartment complexes won’t let you paint (or tell you that you must paint the apartment back if that’s what you choose to do), or make any other cosmetic changes that steer away from the uniform appearance.

For this reason, small, easy, temporary apartment upgrades are in your best interest if you’re looking to make your place your own without making any permanent (and costly) alterations.

To help you get started, here are six, easy, temporary apartment upgrades that you’ll want to implement to make your place your own!

1. Sticker Tiles

Most apartments have cheap, dull tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms, which can be a bit of an eyesore. While these are usually livable, they are still not unique to your personality and decorating style.

There are now stickers that will adhere to your preexisting tiles, but you can choose a pattern that’s a better fit for you. While your flooring will still be tiled, it’ll feel more like you, and, better yet, can be switched back when you’re ready to move out!

2. Removable Wallpaper

If you’re one of the individuals that’s not allowed to paint your walls, then you’re in luck! While wallpaper might feel dated, modern technology has created removable wallpaper that you can adhere to your walls for that spot of color that you’ve been looking for.

This way, you don’t need to put in the work of painting a new space and then painting it again to bring everything back to the way it was, but rather, you’ll need to simply remove the wallpaper when you’re ready to move on. It really couldn’t be any simpler, and you’ll be happy with the results!

3. Sticker Backsplashes

One of the biggest challenges in an apartment kitchen is that there are very little, temporary changes that you can make. That being said, you can still make the space your own!

Adhesive backsplashes are another modern invention that allows you to bring in a pop of yourself to your kitchen, without having to tear everything out and redecorate entirely on your own! Just pick the pattern that you like best, stick it to the wall between your cabinets and the counter and presto! A backsplash that you’re going to love looking at, every day!

4. Use a Rug

Most apartments are carpeted, but that isn’t to say that you’re stuck with the bland color of the faded carpet! Instead, you can always layer your carpet with a rug on top, bringing in pops of color and tying your flooring into the rest of the room’s decoration.

You can go big or small here, and the rug is ready to leave your place when you are, no flooring hassle necessary. So choose your color and pattern and let the rug tie everything together on its own!

5. Treat Your Windows

Another mistake that individuals make in an apartment is in not realizing that the blinds that come standard in your apartment don’t need to be the only treatment that your windows get.

In fact, sometimes a valence, or some curtains, can be the difference between bland and eye-catching. Simply choose a color and pattern that matches your other belongings (or choose a statement color) and let the treatments do the rest. You’ll not only find that you have more coverage from the light when it’s too early in the morning, but you’ll also feel far more at home!

6. Change the Hardware

Last, but certainly not least, you can always change out the easy things in your apartment, inclusive of the hardware throughout it. For instance, kitchen cabinets and drawers may look drab, but with some new, unique hardware, they’ll have a pop of your personality.

You can also do the same on any closets or bathroom and bedroom doors. All you need to do is remove (and save) the old hardware, and then replace everything with your new selection to make your place more unique. When you’re ready to move out, you’ll need to remove your unique choices with the ones that were in the apartment when you moved in, but that’s a relatively simple task.

Decorating your apartment is a daunting task, and even more so knowing that, by the end of the school year, you’ll need to ensure everything is back to the way that it was when you moved in.

For that reason, when you begin decorating, you’ll want to look at easy, temporary apartment upgrades to ensure you love the space that you’re living in, but that it’s also easy to bring your place back to its uniform self before you leave for the year — and CORT Furniture can help you do that too, by allowing you to rent furniture and then return it when you’re done.

Happy decorating everyone!
