4 Things Single People Can Do On Valentine's Day

By Thomas Hart on February 12, 2020

Listen, it happens. Valentine’s Day rolls around, and for the third year in a row, you’re single. I’ve been there. This is like the twentieth Valentine’s Day in a row I’ve been single for, which makes me the perfect person to tell you about a few fun things around Tallahassee you can do on Valentine’s Day even without a partner.

1. Movie Night. Hear me out: this might sound like a date idea, but just read along for a bit, okay? For you FSU students, there is a special showing of the incredibly cheesy late-2000’s hit Jennifer’s Body playing at midnight at the Askew Student Life Center. The midnight movie screenings are always a treasure, taking infamous or very memeable movies and turning them into a late-night gagfest that is fun for anyone, single or not. Jennifer’s Body is a perfect fit for this role, being a horror movie more concerned with showing off its incredibly hot cast of Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried rather than with being a real horror movie (Yep, some hot takes about Jennifer’s Body. I am too bold for this world). With a movie this stupid and fun, a setting conducive for a riot of laughs, and you’ve got yourself a good time. You can even get your other single friends and go together.

Megan Fox plays a demon while Amanda Seyfried plays a hot nerd in glasses. Perfect. (From Jennifer’s Body).

2. Single’s Party. I know you wild animals love to party, so why not just party? Normally I’m not one for excluding anyone, but those couple’s have their hands tied with making Valentine’s Day about each other anyways, so just forget about them. Hosting or attending a whole party where every attendant is single and trying to mingle is a real experience and leads to some really memorable moments. I’m sure you can fill in the blanks yourself, so I’ll just move on.

3. Self-Care Night. Valentine’s Day is a Celebration of Love, and who should you love more than yourself? That’s right; why bother going out trying to have a good time when you can just stay in and have the night to yourself? Take it easy, put on some good movies, drink and eat whatever you want, take a relaxing bath or stay in the shower for way too long, etc. It’s a you-do-you kind of night, for the person who cares about you most: you.

4. Shopping Spree. Now I’ll admit I am no expert on shopping, but if there is one thing I am good at, it’s bargain hunting. Valentine’s Day, like most holidays, is really just a commercial ploy for companies to sell more wares or restaurants to attract more customers disguised as a cultural event. I’m not even trying to be snarky; you can use this to your advantage. Imagine all of the deals, sales, and bargains to be found on Valentine’s Day. Sure, it’s no Christmas, in fact it’s not even really a Halloween, but there are still deals to be found for those on the hunt. Maybe you could get a group together and just go to the mall and see what you can find for really great prices. Even if you find nothing, it’s a great excuse to go out with your friends and have a good time.

And there you have it, four amazing ideas for forgoing the lonely Valentine’s Day and instead turning it into something to enjoy. Which one are you going to choose?
