Games With Gangnam Style

Have you heard of Gangnam Style, the ridiculously popular song by Korean rapper Park Jae-sang, better known as Psy? Of course you have. Everyone has. I’m ashamed to say that until earlier this week, I had never heard of this YouTube sensation. For someone who writes for Uloop, a site that keeps college kids around the nation in the loop, I sure did miss the boat.

According to Guinness World Records, Gangnam style has over 310 million views and over 3 million likes, making it the most liked video on YouTube. Pretty crazy, huh? But of course, you knew this already. You were probably part of those 310 million views.

As penance for my horrible crime, I gave a common drinking game a twist. Every time Clemson scored against Boston College during the Saturday, September 29 football game, I watched the entire Gangnam Style music video. This might sound like a good idea, but I don’t recommend doing it, especially with such a (usually) high scoring team as Clemson.

Things started out slow. It was just my fiancé and me(who had also never heard the song) and we were having some good laughs watching the video. She danced along, and I offered fake Korean to English translations. Do we play it just for a field goal? Why not? Hit that space bar!

Then things really started to pick up during the second quarter. We played the song again and again. Can we go back and un-listen that time we played it for a field goal? No? Oh, boy. When the second half started, I cried a little on the inside (okay, the outside too). My fiancé ripped her ring off and told me she never wanted to see me again. I started rooting for the BC defense to rip off Tajh Boyd’s arms. Don’t judge me; you’ve never listened to Gangnam style three hundred times in a row.

If I never hear this song again it will be fine by me.

I’ve learned my lesson. I hereby vow to try to stay more culturally relevant so that I will never have to do anything like this again. Things could’ve been worse (I could have missed that awful LMFAO song). At least this song is catchy and the video is funny. Still, if you’re looking for a way to hurt someone you know, recommend this little game and then watch as he or she slowly goes crazy.

Make me feel better. Let me know in the comments if you have you ever missed a pop cultural phenomenon.

I have graduated with a major in chemistry. I also knows how to write well. That makes me a rare breed, indeed.
