Alpha Phi's Red Dress Gala

On Saturday, February 2nd, Clemson University’s Iota Rho chapter of Alpha Phi will host its first annual Red Dress Gala to benefit the Alpha Phi Foundation and Cardiac Care.  The Gala will take place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel located in downtown Greenville, about 45 minutes from Clemson’s campus.

A $60 ticket is required for an “evening that will consist of a silent auction filled with tons of popular items, great music, delicious hors d’oeuvres and cocktails,” said Alpha Phi event coordinator Kristen Kiceluk.

The “red dress” holds a deep meaning to the sisters of Alpha Phi. The organization partnered with Cardiac Care in 1946, and it became the Alpha Phi Foundation’s philanthropic priority upon its founding in 1956. The Foundation supports programs and research that study heart disease in women, specifically symptoms, treatment and prevention.

More women than men die of heart disease each year. Today, heart disease kills one in three women and  is the leading cause of death of American women. The disease also kills more women age 65 years and older than all cancers combined. These statistics underscore why the understanding of this disease continues to be a priority.

The Alpha Phi Foundation educates women about the value of heart health through collegiate and alumnae chapter Red Dress events, as the red dress is the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness. Chapters are also encouraged to promote awareness of women’s heart disease during February’s National Heart Month and on “Wear Red Day,” which takes place the first Friday of each February.

“I’m really excited for the event,” said Clemson freshman and Alpha Phi member Kerrin Clark. “I feel like it benefits both women at my school and those across America.”

As the month of February nears, the sisters of Alpha Phi will continue to promote National Heart Month around campus in hopes of creating a greater awareness of their worthy cause.
